SHUBZ AT SOAS
(FESTIVAL OF IDEAS)
SHUBZ AT SOAS, for the SOAS Festival of Ideas was an act as a collective performance of a ritual of resistance within an institution of power. We collaborated with the Mighty Ruler Sound System, Arman Nouri and invited Saige Sounds and Arthi to DJ.
Like SHUBZ at the V&A, we look to occupy institutions to pay tribute the Shubeens a predominately diasporic culture, from the Carribean, South Africa and Ireand. It was and still is a phenomenon usually hosted in domestic spaces or small local social infrastructures to create a more informal night culture. The Shubz was a space predominantly for communities who struggled to be culturally represented or even allowed into formal nightclubs. We worked with Borough Workwear to produce more material artefacts for the event with exclusive t-shirts being designed for the event.
